Your camera roll is full, and the App Store lists dozens of cleaners that all claim to fix it. Most are the same swipe interface with a different paywall. We tested six of the best-known photo cleaner apps for iPhone on a real, messy library and compared them on the four things that actually decide whether you finish the job: privacy, ads, speed, and whether the free tier is real.
How we tested
We ran each app on the same iPhone against the same library.
- Device: iPhone 15 Pro, iOS 18, 256 GB.
- Library: ~24,000 photos and ~900 videos spanning nine years, including several thousand screenshots and a lot of burst sequences.
- Tested: August 2026. Prices and features were checked against current App Store listings at that date.
- What we measured: time to clear 500 photos, how duplicates were grouped and whether the “keep” suggestion was right, what the free tier allows before a paywall appears, and where photos are processed.
We judged privacy by behaviour rather than marketing copy. An app that requires an account or offers cloud AI enhancement is processing at least some photos off-device, whatever its landing page says. We also counted ad interruptions as a speed cost, because on a library this size they decide whether you finish in one sitting or give up halfway.

1. Odoa, best for fast and private cleanup
What it’s best at. Odoa is a swipe-based cleaner: right to keep, left to delete. There are no ads, no account, and no cloud. Everything runs 100% on-device, which is both a privacy guarantee and the reason it’s fast: no upload waits, no processing delays, nothing interrupting you between photos.
It’s more than swiping, though. Odoa finds duplicate and similar photos on-device, groups your library by month with a progress bar for each, and clusters geotagged photos by place on a map so you can clear an entire trip at once. Quick filters jump straight to screenshots, videos, or selfies, or sort by file size to find the biggest space-wasters first.
Safety. Swiped-left photos go to an in-app Trash for review before anything is confirmed, there’s multi-level undo for a mistaken swipe, and confirmed deletions still land in your iPhone’s Recently Deleted album for 30 days. Storage-freed stats are measured from actual file sizes rather than estimated.
Privacy. Nothing is uploaded, including duplicate detection, which runs locally. No account, no sync, no server.
Limitations. No cloud AI enhancement for restoring old or blurry photos, which is the trade-off for staying on-device. The free tier covers your current and recent months plus bookmarks; the full back catalogue needs a subscription.
Pricing. Free tier with no ads; weekly or annual subscription unlocks the whole library.

2. Clever Cleaner, the best free-tier option
What it’s best at. Clever Cleaner is free to use with no ads, and the free tier is genuinely generous: duplicate detection, screenshot and large-video finding, video compression, Live Photo conversion and a swipe mode all work without paying, within a daily cap. It uses on-device AI to group duplicates and visually similar shots, marks a “Best Shot” in each group, and shows how much space you’ll recover.
Safety. It shows what will be removed and how much space comes back before you confirm.
Privacy. Processing is local; photos aren’t uploaded.
Limitations. The free tier is capped daily, so a very large one-sitting cleanup will hit the limit and ask you to pay or come back tomorrow. It also leans on automated scanning rather than a manual swipe flow: excellent at bulk-clearing obvious duplicates, less suited to a judgement call on every photo. If your problem is 4,000 near-identical shots, it’s ideal. If it’s nine years of photos you’ve never sorted, a swipe app will serve you better.
Pricing. Free with daily limits; $6.99/week with a 3-day trial, or $39.99 for a lifetime licence to remove the caps.
3. CleanMy®Phone, best automatic smart scan
What it’s best at. CleanMy Phone is MacPaw’s iPhone cleaner and the successor to Gemini Photos, which the developer discontinued and folded in. Its smart scan sorts your library into categories (duplicates, similar shots, blurred images, screenshots) and proposes a batch to delete, so you review groups rather than individual photos. It’s the most “do it for me” app on this list.
Safety. You review each proposed category before deleting.
Privacy. Runs offline and on-device, with no ads.
Limitations. It’s the most expensive way to solve this problem, and the automated categories occasionally sweep up photos you’d have kept, so the review step isn’t optional. If you see Gemini Photos recommended in an older roundup, note that it no longer exists on iOS.
Pricing. Around $9.99/month, with a lifetime licence reported near $44.99.
4. Swipewipe, feature-rich but ad-heavy
What it’s best at. Swipewipe is polished and popular (4.7 stars across tens of thousands of reviews), and it made swipe-to-clean famous. It offers extras the on-device apps don’t: a memory map and AI enhancement for old or blurry shots.
Safety. It shows each photo before deleting, which is the right model.
Privacy. This is the trade-off. Cloud-powered features like AI enhancement mean some photos are processed off-device.
Limitations. Its free tier shows an ad roughly every sixth photo, which works out to more than 80 interruptions across a 500-photo session. Its subscription has been reported around $8.99/week or $109.99/year, the highest price here.

5. Slidebox, best for organizing into albums
What it’s best at. Slidebox is swipe-based too, but built around sorting photos into albums as you go rather than only freeing space. It works directly with the Photos app, so changes sync to iCloud automatically. It’s an App Store Editors’ Choice at 4.8 stars.
Safety. Standard swipe-with-undo flow.
Privacy. On-device.
Limitations. Managing older photos (beyond roughly a year) requires a subscription, and the album-first design means a pure “free up space fast” session is slower than with a dedicated cleaner.
Pricing. Reported around $1.99/week, $4.99/month or $49.99/year, with a one-time unlock option available.
6. Picnic, best for curating a library
What it’s best at. Picnic is a photo organizer more than a cleaner. You sort photos into albums, it surfaces things worth tidying, and you end up with a curated library as well as a smaller camera roll. Pick it if you want a camera roll you enjoy scrolling, not just a lower storage number.
Privacy. On-device.
Limitations. It costs more than several apps here, and curation takes longer than deletion. It solves a different problem: if your storage is full today, start elsewhere.

- Apple’s built-in tools. Free and already installed. Photos > Utilities > Duplicates finds exact duplicates on recent iOS versions, and Settings > General > iPhone Storage shows what’s actually eating space. A note on “free”
“Free” means at least four different things in this category, and the difference matters more than any feature list.
Clever Cleaner is free to use with no ads, but capped daily, with a one-off $39.99 licence to lift the caps. Odoa has a free tier with no ads that covers a usable slice of your library, with the rest behind a subscription. Swipewipe is free but ad-supported, so it costs you time instead of money. And a lot of listings are merely free to install, paywalling you before you’ve cleared a single photo.
That last one is the trap. Before granting any cleaner access to your library, open its App Store listing and read the in-app purchase list. A weekly subscription is the standard tell.
What actually matters in a photo cleaner
Whichever you pick, three things separate a safe cleaner from a risky one:
- Photos stay on your device. No server means nothing to breach and nothing to leak.
- You see what’s about to be deleted. Bulk deletion without a review step is how people lose photos they wanted.
- Deletions go through Recently Deleted. That’s your 30-day undo, and any app bypassing it is removing your safety net.
