Shared albums are free storage magic — until you tap Save Image 400 times and duplicate your own library. Here’s the cleanup.
The quick answer
Shared albums themselves cost you nothing (no phone space, no iCloud quota). The weight comes from saved copies: open each album, keep the memories in the cloud, delete your local re-saves. Leave dead albums via the people tab. iCloud vs local confusion? See delete from iPhone but not iCloud.
Step 1: Delete the re-saves
- Open Photos > Albums > Shared Albums and pick the biggest family/trip album.
- Compare with your main library around the same dates — saved copies sit right next to originals.
- Delete the local duplicates; the shared versions stay safe in the cloud.
What this gives you: the most common shared-album weight, gone with zero memory loss. What this does not give you: anything inside the album — leaving or deleting there affects other subscribers, so only unsubscribe, never “delete” shared content in anger.
Step 2: Leave the dead ones
Wedding 2022 with 3 photos? Tap the album > people tab > Unsubscribe. It vanishes from your phone; others keep theirs. The ex still sharing an album with you gets the same treatment — see the scenario no one writes guides for, handled in one tap (delete-all guide for the nuclear version).
Step 3: Stop future doubles
When family shares your own photos back, don’t Save Image — you already have the original. And for new shares, prefer shared albums over AirDrop-everything: no local copy, no iCloud quota, everyone’s happy.
The bottom line
Cloud memories stay, local doubles go, dead albums get left. Shared albums are the one Apple feature that gives storage instead of taking it — once you stop saving everything twice.
