Nobody talks about duplicate videos — but one doubled 4K clip wastes more than a thousand duplicate photos. iOS won’t find them for you: the Duplicates album is photos-only. Here’s the manual hunt.
The quick answer
Sort videos biggest-first and look for pairs: same thumbnail, same length, adjacent dates. Keep the better-graded copy, delete the draft, empty Recently Deleted. Odoa’s size-sorted video filter surfaces pairs automatically, on-device.
Step 1: Know the four duplication machines
- Trim > Save as New Clip — keeps the 3-minute original next to the 15-second keeper. Delete the original after verifying the keeper plays.
- Chat re-saves — WhatsApp/Telegram save the video you just shot when someone sends it back. See stop WhatsApp auto-save.
- App exports — TikTok/CapCut drafts exported twice. Keep the posted one.
- Re-downloads — saving your own shared post back to the roll.
What sorting by size gives you: pairs jump out — two 800MB files with the same thumbnail aren’t a coincidence. What it does not give you: certainty on edited-vs-original. Play 5 seconds; keep the better one.
Step 2: Delete the pair-weight first
Work top-down: biggest pairs first, like deleting videos taking up space. Five pair decisions can free 3GB. Then run the duplicate photo pass for the small stuff.
Step 3: Empty Recently Deleted
Photos > Albums > Recently Deleted > Delete All (walkthrough). Videos linger 30 days otherwise.
The bottom line
Biggest-first, pair-hunt, trim-originals deleted. Duplicate videos are rare and enormous — the highest gigabytes-per-decision cleanup there is.
