Every iOS release adds a little storage help and leaves the real work to you. iOS 26 is no exception — here’s what helps and what doesn’t.
The quick answer
iOS 26 keeps the same toolkit: iPhone Storage breakdown, Duplicates album (exact copies only), Recently Deleted (30-day safety net), offload-unused-apps suggestions. None of them decide for you — bursts, similar shots and giant videos still need a human pass. Use Apple’s tools for the audit, a swipe cleanup for the decisions.
What iOS 26 gives you
- Storage breakdown (Settings > General > iPhone Storage): the audit — see how to read it.
- Duplicates album: exact-copy merging, bulk-able. Blind to bursts — why.
- Review large attachments: Messages offers biggest-first deletion. Good; Photos deserves the same treatment (Odoa does it).
- Optimize Storage: thumbnails on-device, originals in iCloud. Helps the phone, bills iCloud — the math.
What this gives you: visibility and safety nets. What this does not give you: decisions. Apple will never auto-delete your photos — correctly. That’s your job, 2 seconds at a time.
The workflow that uses both
- Audit in iPhone Storage (2 min).
- Merge exact duplicates in the Duplicates album (5 min).
- Swipe the rest biggest-first in Odoa (15 min).
- Empty Recently Deleted (30 sec).
The bottom line
iOS 26 organizes the problem; it doesn’t solve it. Twenty minutes, four steps, gigabytes back — same as every iOS, just with nicer charts.
